Several months ago, I checked out The Penderwicks because I’d read several glowing reviews from bloggers with similar reading tastes. I thought it was probably a bit too long for M to enjoy as a read-aloud, but she saw it, asked about it, and wanted to give it a try. We got a few chapters in but she got nervous during a tense moment in the story and decided to “try it again when I’m five.” I needed to return it by that time, but I finally checked it out again and finished it and I’m so glad I did.
I love the characters of the four sisters and the old-fashioned feel of the story. I love how the sisters play with one another and care so deeply for each other. I love their absent-minded father and their need to make things right for everyone they care about. I can’t wait until M is old enough to enjoy the story. It will be so fun to share it with her. And I’m looking forward to getting a chance to read the sequel – The Penderwicks on Gardem Street.
