Last week, we read My Blue Boat from our Before Five in a Row curriculum. For an art activity, I combined some suggestions for exploring the color blue and an activity from The Little Hands Art Book for using droppers to mix colors. I gave each girl several droppers and a muffin tin to which I added watery green, blue, and purple paint. I encouraged them to use the other cups to make different shades of blue. C needed some help using the droppers, but M took off on her own and made some great color combos.
Once they’d mixed for awhile, I gave them paintbrushes and cardstock. They made lots of wonderful paintings. This week when we read The Big Green Pocketbook, they asked to do the same project again. Using blue and yellow paint to make green reminded M and me of Leo Lionni’s Little Blue and Little Yellow so we requested it from the library and we’ve now ready it several times. Then I saw Anatasia Suen’s 5 Great Books About Color and requested several of those from the library. We may be exploring color for the next several weeks.
