I picked up Reign of the Sea Dragons by Sneed B. Collard from the New Arrivals shelf at our library. I thought M would enjoy the descriptions of prehistoric sea creatures and their evolution since she is fascinated by large creatures of the sea and dinosaurs. The inside cover has shows a scaled comparison of modern whales and sharks and prehistoric creatures such as Temnodontosaurus and Elasmosaurus. In the five chapters, Collard describes Ichthyosaurs, the earliest sea reptiles, Pleiosaurs, and Mosasaur, and their eventual extinction. M was particularly fascinated with the similiarities between Ichtyosaur skeletons and skeletons of modern dolphins. The resource section at the end is includes websites, books, and museums with ancient marine reptile collections.

Hi Sarah,
This sounds like a great book for us as my M is also keen on large sea creatures and dinosaurs. Your daughter might like Stone Girl, Bone Girl which I’ve reviewed here:
http://www.kuvik.net/ztoft/playingbythebook/2009/09/09/my-palaeontology-princess/ – my elder daughter (almost 5) loves it.
Sarah,
I LOVED this book. My two sons also love dinosaurs and sea creatures, so it was a great find!
All the best,
Lori
